The FI-SM Sensor enables to monitor growth of small fruits as well as variations of their diameter in submillimeter range. Two phenomena affect diurnal behavior of fruit diameter: growth and water balance of a plant. A growth component is dominant in most of cases. However, some fruits may loose water or decelerate their growth at daytime in water stress conditions. Two features of the daily fruit growth curve are to be noted: a diurnal form and daily maximums trend that is growth rate (see Figure below).
Thus, the FI-SM sensor allows investigating intimate effects of environmental factors on water balance and growth of fruits.


A typical FI-SM record of grape berry growth curve is shown in the figure on the left. Berry size daily variation riches about 0.5 mm. At the same time, a growth trend is affected by environmental factors, vapor pressure deficit (VPD) in that particular case. Each time when VPD was elevating, the growth rate consistently decelerated.

The FI-SM Fruit Sensor includes a LVDT-based sensor mounted on special clip and a dc powered LVDT signal conditioner with optional power adapter for unipolar power supply.
